Yet Another Learner's Log

Notes from my exercise in learning Japanese

Sick Days

Haven’t been keeping well. Feverish and aching all over. Study is on hold till I get back onto my feet again. :-/

12/11 EDIT : Still down with fever, the doc says its the flu or somethin’. I guess I’m gonna be out of action for a few more days.

16/11 EDIT : Feeling a little better now, but I’m off to my folks’ place tomorrow. I’ll be back with a bang for the new year. :D

Next Steps

Spent the day looking for various resources to expand my skills in listening and vocab areas. So far, I have a laundry list of websites that seem to have courses for this kind of thing.

Listening

Vocab/Misc

I’m yet to decide where to start from. I plan to start with JapanesePod101 for the listening and N5 memrise course for vocab. I’ll reserve tomorrow to dig into some details and give a few of these resources as shot.

PS: Overstepped today’s timeslot by 35mins in the evening session. I really need to work on my Google and skimming skills :)

  • Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Day 63, Evening : Review of following items:

Planning to take the day tomorrow to plan ahead and sample some of the sites that offer listening and reading exercises.

Day 60 : Review

Yay!! Brings up 2 months of study time. I guess I’m getting pretty decent at this :)

  • Adjectives
  • Vocab section of the two chapters above.

  • Expressing State of Being & associated Vocab

Today’s sitting took a bit more time (because: writing!). Total time spent was aroung 2hrs 15mins.

Back from the Hoildays

I’m back from the thanksgiving holiday weekend and I must admit, it was plenty of fun… as for Japanese learning, I didn’t find much time, but I did a trial run of Anki flash cards on my Android phone and I liked it. :)

As for continuing further, I plan to review certain topics that I have difficulties with starting tomorrow along with a few words (5-10) on Anki everyday for a week and see how that goes, at this point, my vocab is pretty limited. :-/

Short Break & Future Planning

So… this brings up the end of the “Basic” and “Essential” grammar sections of the Tae Kim guide and honestly, I’m not really sure where to go now. I’m not very confident that I can recall most of the stuff, but I guess I’m fairly familiar with the common sentence constructs (pretty sure I can’t get the slang right though, that thing won’t stick)

Most likely, I’ll start with some reading and listening practice, I’m pretty weak on the Vocab (mostly ~150 words is all I know at this stage) so the max RoI is to be had with reading (should help reinforce sentence constructs and introduce new words). Also, I’d like to take the wonderful advice I got on the RTK forums and get started on listening too. :D

I’ve not really made up my mind to follow through with this, but for now, this is the study plan that I do have.

But…. before I get ahead of myself, I’ll be taking a short break till December as I’ll be taking the rest of the week off and will be back only after Thanksgiving.

PS: I don’t really want to count this as a study day, ‘cause most of the stuff here is just a rant :)

Day 58 : More sentence-ending particles

Day 58, Morning: Sentence Ending Particle-な and Particle-さ

  • After “よ” and “ね”, “さ” and “な” are the most commonly used sentence-ending particles
  • “さ” is a very casual form of “よ” and is similar to the English “like”
  • Eg: ディズニーランドに行ったんだけどさ、なんかさ、すごい込んでて… -> I went to Disney Land and it was really crowded…
  • can use “な” in place of “ね”
  • sounds rough and generally applies to males
  • Eg: 今、図書館に行くんだよな -> You are going to the library now huh? (seeking explanation)
  • als used with the question marker “か” to indicate that the speaker is considering something
  • Eg: 今日は雨が降るかな? -> I wonder if it’ll rain today.

Sentence-ending Particle-かい and Particle-だい

  • strongly masculine sentence endings for asking questions
  • “かい” -> used for yes/no questions. Eg: さきちゃんって呼んでもいいかい? -> Can (I) call you Saki-chan?
  • “だい” -> used for open-ended questions. Eg: おい、どこに行くんだい? -> Hey, where are (you) going?

Additional Notes: Gender-specific sentence-ending particles

  • primarily used just to emphasize something and doesn’t really have a meaning per se
  • can make your statements sound much stronger and/or very gender-specific
  • “わ” is just like “よ” except it sounds very feminine, “かしら” is also a very feminine version of “かな”
  • Eg: もう時間がないわ -> There is no more time.
  • “ぞ” and “ぜ” are identical to “よ” makes you sound “cool” and manly
  • Eg: おい、行くぞ! -> Hey, we’re going!

Day 58, Review

Review of material from yesterday and today, esp the slang part. That’s a bit hard to get :-/
